Top Tips For Young People Travelling By Bus
We want all children and young people to feel confident using our buses. Whether you’re travelling to and from school or heading out with friends, we want you to feel safe, comfortable and supported every step of the way.
Our buses are welcoming, inclusive spaces and our drivers are always there to help.
Below are some key pointers to help you create positive travel behaviours on our network.
What to know before you go
As a resident in Scotland aged 21 and under, you are entitled to free bus travel. If you don’t have your under 22s bus pass yet – more information is available on the Transport Scotland website.
If your bus pass is lost or damaged, you will need another payment method to pay for your travel. Our drivers don’t give out change, so if you’re using cash, remember to use the correct fare!

Getting to the bus stop
1.
Plan a safe route to the bus stop and always use a safe place to cross the road should you need to.
2.
Wait for the bus at the bus stop. Check the tracker at the stop or our Bus and Tram App to find out when your bus is due.
3.
While at the stop, be mindful of other people who may need to sit down at the stop, especially disabled and elderly people.
4.
Stay alert so you don’t miss your bus.
Getting on the bus​
1.
When the bus approaches your stop, signal to the driver that you wish to get on the bus. Have your pass ready to scan before you get on the bus. and remember you are not allowed to bring food or drink onto the vehicle, unless it is in a sealed container.
2.
Allow other customers to get off the bus before attempting to board, giving them space so that they can step off the bus safely. When it is safe to do so, board the bus one at a time.
3.
Have a look for any free seats on board. There are more seats upstairs on our double deck vehicles – remember to use the handrails when using the stairs.
4.
Please do not sit in the priority seats if you do not need them. If a customer boards the bus who requires a priority seat, please offer it to them.
5.
You can stand downstairs, however, please make sure you are not blocking others from moving up and down the aisle safely. Standing is not permitted on our stairwells or anywhere upstairs.
6.
Once you find a seat, please remain there until you are ready to get off the bus.
The Journey
1.
While you’re on the bus, please respect other customers and our driver. If you’re listening to music, speaking on the phone, or showing videos to friends, please use your headphones.
2.
Sit safely with both feet on the floor. Please don’t put your feet on the seats – our buses are out on service all day, so we ask that you help us to keep them neat and tidy.
3.
You can speak to our drivers if you spot something that’s not quite right or you start to feel uncomfortable while on board.
4.
If you would be more comfortable speaking anonymously, reach out to Fearless – the dedicated youth service of the independent charity Crimestoppers.
Getting off the bus
1.
When the bus approaches your destination, press the stop button and make your way safely towards the doors, ensuring you hold on to handrails or seat backs with both hands as you move through the vehicle.
2.
If, for any reason, you do not feel safe or stable in moving while the bus is moving, please wait until the bus has come to a stop before leaving your seat.
3.
Remember to thank the driver on your way off!
After you leave the bus
1.
You may need to walk a short distance to your destination once you get off the bus. Always use the safest and quickest route to your destination.
2.
Please use the nearest pedestrian crossing to cross the road safely. Do not cross near the front or rear of our vehicles as our drivers may not be able to see you – and you will not be able to see both sides of the road before you cross.
3.
There will be a lot of cars on the road at this time so stay alert!
