As we recently reported, one of our mature apprentice engineers, Wojciech Hernik, won the IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) Skills Challenge in the Mechanical Apprentice category in Bristol over the summer.

The IRTE Skills Challenge is a voluntary scheme, aimed at raising standards and encouraging self-regulation in road transport maintenance. Wojciech – now in his final year of his mature apprenticeship at Lothian – was up against tough competition from industry operators from across the UK. To have finished in top position in the challenge is a true testament to his work ethic, talent and determination.

Lothian’s Apprentice Engineering programme is delivered in partnership with GTG Training, allowing for hands-on learning in one of Lothian’s busy garage workshops alongside experienced mechanics, complemented by in-depth training in GTG’s modern, purpose-built centre at Newbridge.

L-R: Colin Gardner (Automotive Instructor, GTG Edinburgh), Wojciech Hernik (Lothian Mature Apprentice), and Dylan Dastey (Chief Engineer, Lothian).

In recognition of Wojciech’s recent achievement, he was invited to GTG’s centre at Newbridge recently where he was presented with a token of appreciation from Graeme Findlay (General Manager, GTG Edinburgh), Billy Hammond (Director, GTG), and Colin Gardner (Automotive Instructor, GTG Edinburgh).

Lothian’s Chief Engineer, Dylan Dastey, who also attended Wojciech’s presentation, spoke of the massive strides he’d taken at Lothian, from his initial role as a fueller/shunter and labourer, to now being in the position of being able to influence, support and lead those he’s working with on his apprenticeship.
