Service change from 11 September 2022Changes to Lothian network to stabilise network and provide better reliability

Lothian will introduce a service change from Sunday 11th September which will help to stabilise our network and ensure our services meet the needs of our customers as we continue to take steps in our economic recovery post pandemic.

This change will see some timetable changes and alterations to frequencies on some of our services. There will be no changes to Lothian Country services at this time.

As explained in recent weeks, Lothian – like many transport operators across the UK – has been impacted by ongoing recruitment issues which has affected service provision across our network. Our teams continue to work hard in this difficult climate to recruit and train new drivers so we can deliver reliable services for our customers.

We would like to thank everyone – customers and colleagues alike – for their patience and understanding.

In response to requests from Leith Community Council for a bus service across Leith Links and to provide a new link to developing housing in North Leith, there will be some alterations to Services 21, 25, 34 and 49.

⚠ Update to Service 34 ⚠

Due to Constitution Street being unavailable from Sunday 11 September as part of the Trams to Newhaven project, Service 34 will be subject to the following diversion until the road has opened to traffic.

Between Bernard Street and Links Gardens, buses will operate via Baltic StreetSalamander Street and Salamander Place in both directions.

Services that currently operate via Restalrig Road (21 and 25) will now serve Lochend Road, and services that currently operate via Lochend Road (34 and 49) will now serve Restalrig Road.

Service 21 will operate via Duke Street, Lochend Road, Lochend Avenue, Restalrig Road South and Sleigh Drive.

Service 25
will operate via Duke Street, Lochend Road, Lochend Road South, Lochend Drive and Sleigh Drive.

Service 34 will operate via Commercial Street. Bernard Street, Constitution Street, Queen Charlotte Street, Links Gardens, Restalrig Road, Restalrig Road South. (Currently postponed until the reopening of Constitution Street).

Service 49 will operate via Duke Street, Hermitage Place, Restalrig Road, Restalrig Road South and Sleigh Drive.

These changes in the Lochend area ensure that the local links between both Lochend Road, Restalrig Road and Leith Walk are maintained. Other routes in the area remain unchanged.

Service 12 route between Gyle Centre to Haymarket Station is unchanged. From Haymarket, Service 12 will operate via Morrison Link, West Approach, Lothian Road, Lauriston Place, Bristo Square and will then continue to Portobello as per the current route of Service 42 via King’s Buildings, Cameron Toll, Craigmillar and Duddingston.

In the evenings, Service 12 will operate between Bristo Place and South Gyle (Redheughs Avenue), and on Sunday between Gyle Centre and Bread Street.

The section of route between Haymarket and Princes Street is withdrawn, Services 26, 31, X18 continue to provide a frequent link between Corstorphine and Princes Street.

Service 42 is withdrawn, partly replaced by Service 12 between Bristo Square and Portobello.

The section between Craigleith and Bristo Square is withdrawn due to low usage. Service 38 continues to provide a link between Craigleith Retail Park and Comely Bank. Services 24 and 29 continue to operate between Stockbridge and the City Centre, with Service 29 providing a link to Surgeons’ Hall.

School journeys between Leith and Holy Rood High School will continue to operate but will be renumbered as Service 12.
