Meet JackieOne of our longest serving drivers

As part of our series of interviews with some of our longest serving employees for our centenary year celebrations, meet Jackie, one of the drivers at our Longstone Garge.  Jackie will have been with the company for 50 years next month.

When did you start working with the company?
April 1969 at the Leith Garage.

What role were you in / what do you do now?
I started with Lothian as a conductor when I was 22.  I began driving buses in 1972 and moved to Longstone garge in 1975.  I’ve been here ever since and now work three days a week.

What is the biggest change you have seen in your time with the company?
The thing that I remember most is moving from two man to one man operation.  It was a huge change for everyone at the business.

Tell us your favourite Lothian memory?
Back when I was a conductor I wasn on a bus travelling through Newhaven when a man boarded with lie lobsters in pots.  They escaped and were walking about the top deck of the bus! A girl on the bus screamed for the whole journey until we managed to get them back in their cages.

What are you looking forward to about this years celebrations?
Like a lot of people, I’m looking forward to seeing the old buses back in service for the vintage running days.
