Charity of Choice – One Year On….Macmillan's Laura updates us on her year of working with Lothian

It’s been just over a year since we chose Macmillan Cancer Support as our Charity of Choice and what a year its been. We learnt lots about the work Macmillan does locally and have had great fun raising money and awareness for the charity.

Laura Foreman, Macmillan’s Edinburgh Regional Fundraising Manager, tells us about the highlights of the year for her.

'Within our first year, Lothian has raised £18,323 for people living with cancer in Edinburgh and the Lothians. We at Macmillan are so incredibly grateful for the work you are doing for us and I wanted to let you know how this money is helping Macmillan to reach more local people with cancer when they need us most.
Macmillan nurses

Macmillan Nurses possess a wide variety of skills and expertise and use this knowledge to ensure that cancer patients experience the best possible care and support. Macmillan Nurses can help to improve quality of life for people with cancer through assisting with decision making, symptom management and emotional support

The money raised so far could pay for a Macmillan nurse for over 4 months supporting people in the cancer wards in hospitals such as the Western General in Edinburgh.

The value of the partnership between Lothian and Macmillan is not just about raising funds, but raising vital awareness of cancer and the services we provide to locally. With Lothian's gift of the branded bus, Hamish, and the bus bills displaying vital information about our Macmillan Edinburgh Libraries services, we are able to spread the word of Macmillan and the services we provide. With 91 people hearing the devastating words “it’s cancer” each and every week in Edinburgh and the Lothians, this is such an important objective to fulfil.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Lothian and all their customers who have raised money, engaged with us and helped to deliver a fantastic first year to this partnership.

I cannot wait to see what Lothian has in store for the rest of the partnership. From a personal and Macmillan point of view, I am very proud to be involved in this partnership and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you all. Bring on year two!

With best wishes,

Laura
