Clean Air Day – 21 June 2018

Edinburgh is celebrating the UK’s Clean Air Day on Thursday, 21 June with a series of activities in the City designed to raise public awareness for the need to improve the city’s air quality.

At Lothian, we recognise that buses and active travel are the solution to helping to improve air pollution.

As Edinburgh’s largest bus operator, our fleet includes 98 hybrid buses and a large number of Euro 6 buses.

A Euro 6 diesel bus emits ten times less harmful emissions per passenger than a diesel car and technology is now so advanced that Euro 6 bus NOx emissions are reduced by up to 98% compared to a Euro 5 bus.  These buses operate in Edinburgh’s Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs).

We have also invested in six new zero emission electric buses, which not only improve the city’s air quality but help to reduce noise pollution too. These buses operate on Service 1, a high profile and popular route running from Clermiston to Easter Road through a central Air Quality Management Area.

As a result of these and other initiatives which are not only on the road but in our garages too, we continue to operate one of the greenest and youngest bus fleets in the UK, delivering a sustainable public transport service.

By continuing to prioritising public transport and active travel, emissions will reduce and we can all enjoy a cleaner, greener city.
