
A service change will take effect from Sunday 7 September on Lothian, NightBus, Lothian Country and East Coast Buses networks.
Key improvements in this service change will include:
- More buses on Services 5 and 35 and a new Sunday timetable on Service 45.
- Adjustments to the NightBus network including a new Service N1 and more journeys on Service N35.
- Improvements to the Lothian Country network with new links to Armadale and Livingston Village, plus additional journeys introduced across West Lothian.
- Enhanced connectivity on the East Coast Buses network with additional journeys, and extension of Service 106 into Edinburgh city centre and the Western General Hospital.
Changes to bus stopping patterns in Edinburgh
Haymarket (West Maitland Street): Lothian services 3, 4, 25, 26, 31, 33, 44 passing West Maitland Street will no longer stop here. Alternative stops will be available at Dalry Road, Haymarket Terrace or Shandwick Place. East Coast Buses, express services and NightBus will continue to stop here.
Abbeyhill (eastbound): East Coast Buses will continue to stop at their current stop, however Lothian services 15, 26, X26, 45 will be moved to the first stop allowing a more equal distribution of services and reducing delays.

Revised route and timetables. There will be a minor route change at West Granton to accommodate construction works. The terminus will be moved to Granton Station Square.

An additional daily late evening journey will operate from Clerwood to Levenhall (Waverley Steps at 23:55), and an additional daily late evening journey will operate from Seton Sands to Clerwood (Shandwick Place at 00:07).

Revised timetable. Improved evening timetable with more frequent buses and Polton Mill served until end of service Monday to Saturday. Improved Sunday evening timetable with a later journey to Polton Mill.
Revised route and timetable. In Cramond, this service will operate in a loop (anticlockwise) via Gamekeeper’s Road.
Service 33
Minor timetable changes.
Service 34
Revised timetable. On Saturdays and Sundays, some early morning and late evening journeys will serve Heriot-Watt Research Park.
Service 35
Revised timetable. Sunday frequency will be increased from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes.
Service 36
Revised timetable. Later journeys will be introduced from Hermiston Gait. Earlier Saturday and Sunday morning journeys will also be introduced on this service.
Service X37
Revised route and timetables. In consultation with Midlothian Council and the City of Edinburgh Council, due to the low volume of customers using the facility, journeys will no longer serve Straiton Park and Ride, which will reduce journey times for most customers using the service in Midlothian. Alternative stops continue to be available on the A701.
Service 38
Revised route and timetables. There will be a minor route change at West Granton to accommodate construction works (with the terminus moved to Granton Station Square). Additional afternoon and evening peak journeys will be introduced Monday to Friday.
Service 44
Minor timetable changes. There will be a revised Monday to Friday early morning timetable with an additional journey introduced from Wallyford.
Service 45
Revised timetable. A Sunday daytime service will be introduced between Heriot-Watt University and the city centre, operating hourly.
Service 47/47B
Revised route and timetable. In consultation with Midlothian Council and the City of Edinburgh Council, due to the low volume of customers using the facility, journeys will no longer serve Straiton Park and Ride, reducing journey times for most customers using the service in Midlothian. Alternative stops continue to be available on the A701.
Service 49
Minor timetable changes.
In October this year, Lothian celebrate 100 years of NightBus operation. Across the last century changes to societal and travel habits have necessitated many alterations to the network to ensure that it continued to serve the needs of customers. This centennial year is no exception, as we look to adapt to changing social habits, resulting in less journeys being made on the NightBus network.
A full review of the NightBus network has been undertaken, with journeys now carrying only very few customers identified for withdrawal or replacement. Alternative services will still provide connections for these customers. Lothian continues to operate one of the most comprehensive NightBus network in the UK.
Service N1
New service N1 will operate from Leith Street to Clerwood via Lothian Road, Fountain Park, Gorgie, Balgreen, Stenhouse, Carrick Knowe, Corstorphine and Drumbrae.
One journey will operate Monday to Friday, and 3 journeys will operate on Saturdays and Sudays.
Return journeys from Clerwood on Saturday and Sunday mornings will operate via Corstorphine Road and Haymarket to Leith Street.
This service will partly replace the withdrawn N22 an N26 between Haymarket and Clerwood.
Service N3
Revised timetable. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the 00:36 and the 03:36 journeys from Haymarket will terminate at Mayfield Roundabout.
Service N11
Minor timetable changes.
Service N14
No change.
Service N16
No change.
Service N18
No change.
Service N22
WITHDRAWN This service will be withdrawn due to very low customer usage, with an average of only 2 passengers on Monday to Friday journeys, and 7 on Saturday and Sunday journeys.
The new Service N1 will continue to provide links for Stenhouse. The last journey on Edinburgh Trams departs the city centre at 00:19 and provides links to Broomhouse and Edinburgh Park.
Service N25
Revised timetable. Service frequency will be slightly reduced at around 02:00.
Service N26
Revised route and timetable.
The section between Haymarket and Clerwood will be withdrawn with the following alternative services still providing connections:
- Later 26 journey introduced to Clerwood (daily 00:07 at Shandwick Place).
- Airlink 100 operating up to every 20 minutes every night with journeys priced the same as the Night Ticket (£3.50).
- Saturday and Sunday morning’s Service N18 operates serving all stops along the A8 (departures 00:20 and 03:20 from Leith Street).
- New Service N1 will provide links between the city centre, Lothian Road, Fountain Park and Corstorphine, Clermiston and Clerwood.
A revised timetable will improve reliability between Haymarket and Seton Sands.
Service N28
Minor timetable changes.
Service N30
Revised route and timetable.
- This service will operate every 40 minutes between Musselburgh and Clovenstone.
- From Musselburgh, journeys heading towards the city will omit Stoneybank and Queen Margaret University and will operate direct via Newhailes Road and Newcraighall Road.
Service N31
Revised timetable. Monday to Friday, the 00:20 journey to Bonnyrigg will continue to operate, however the 01:35 journey will be withdrawn due to very low customer usage (averaging only 3 customers per journey).
There will be minor changes to the Saturday and Sunday timetables.
Service N35
Improved timetable. Service N35 will operate additional journeys towards Ocean Terminal via Easter Road each night (01:35 from Heriot-Watt to Ocean Terminal, and Saturday and Sunday at 00:33 from Slateford to Ocean Terminal).

Since launching our network of local services in West Lothian in December 2023, we have continued to engage with the local authority as we monitor the performance and viability of these services.
We are delighted that the trend in bus use in the area continues to be positive and these changes represent a significant investment by Lothian Country to ensure that customer growth can be maintained and encouraged. This includes responding to community feedback with regards direct links, frequencies, service reliability and later evening buses.
Service X18
Revised timetable. An additional Monday to Friday early morning journey will operate from Bathgate, and afternoon peak journey from Edinburgh.
Service X19
Minor timetable changes.
Service X27/X28
Revised timetable and stopping pattern. The morning timetable will be adjusted to provide additional X27 journeys towards Edinburgh. There will be a review of the limited stop pattern on Calder Road in response to changes in road speeds. Services will now only stop at Calder View, Edinburgh Napier University, Saughton Mains/Parkhead Terrace and Saughton Rose Gardens.

Service 72
Revised route and timetable.
Service frequency improved. There will be improved frequencies – from every 60 minutes to every 40 minutes – between Fauldhouse and Winchburgh, on all days.
In Winchburgh, a revised route will operate via Duntarvie Castle Road, terminating at Winchburgh Campus. The service will no longer operate to Kirkliston, with the section of route between Winchburgh and Kirkliston accommodated by Service X19.
New early morning and late evening journeys will be introduced, with last departures from Livingston around 23:00.
Service 73
Revised route and timetable.
Following customer feedback, a new direct link will be introduced between Armadale and Livingston via Livingston Village and Eliburn Park every hour Monday to Saturday daytime.
The route will no longer serve the Civic Centre, St John’s Hospital, Wester Inch and Blackburn. The revised Service 74 will instead serve Wester Inch and Blackburn (see Service 74 section for further details).
Services 72, X27, X28 and X40 will continue to serve St John’s Hospital.
Together, Service 73 and 74 will provide more fast, direct journeys between Livingston and Bathgate with a combined 30-minute Monday to Saturday daytime frequency.
Service 74
Revised route and timetable.
The service will be extended to operate direct via Alderstone Road to Bathgate, then Wester Inch and Blackburn (as per current service 73). Proxy stops will be provided on Alderstone Road for St John’s Hospital.
This service revision will provide a new direct north/south link across Livingston without the need to change or pay twice at Livingston Centre.
Additional early morning and late evening journeys will be provided to Blackburn and Fauldhouse.
Route altered in Fauldhouse. Buses will continue to serve Fauldhouse shops, then run a one-way loop via Lanrigg Road and Eastfield Road, terminating at its south end before continuing towards Livingston.
Together, service 73 and 74 will provide more fast, direct journeys between Livingston and Bathgate with a combined 30-minute Monday to Saturday daytime frequency.
Service N28

These changes follow the full analysis of network alterations made in the spring and consider customer and community feedback, with the aim of improving connectivity and service reliability.
Service X4
Revised timetable.
There will be an improved early morning timetable allowing for earlier journeys and better coordination with services 106 and 113 in Tranent.
Due to exceptionally low customer demand, the afternoon peak journeys currently continuing to Tranent Castle Road will instead terminate at the Windygoul terminus.
The 00:00 journey from Tranent to Musselburgh will be withdrawn due to low usage. Later journeys continue to be provided on services 107 and 113.
Service X5
Revised timetable.
Service X6
Revised timetable. Following customer feedback, an additional early morning journey from Haddington to the Western General Hospital will be introduced, providing a 07:00 arrival in Edinburgh.
Service X7
Minor timetable changes.
Service 106
Revised route and timetable.
Following community feedback, this route will be extended into Edinburgh re-establishing direct links for local communities in East Lothian.
A revised route will operate from Haddington via Fort Kinnaird to Western General Hospital (following the same route as Service X6) on Monday to Friday inter-peak, and Saturdays. An evening service will also be introduced Monday to Saturday. These changes will provide a direct bus to and from Edinburgh city centre from 06:15 to 22:30.
Buses will be re-routed via Wallyford Park & Ride and The Loan.
On Sundays the service will continue to terminate at Fort Kinnaird.
Service 107
Revised route. Buses will be rerouted via Wallyford Park and Ride and The Loan, as per Service 106.
Service 113
Revised timetable. There will be alterations to the early morning timetable allowing for earlier journeys and better coordination with Services X4 and 106 in Tranent.
Service 120
No change.
Service 121
Revised timetable.
Following customer feedback, the first journey from North Berwick to Haddington will start at North Berwick Station before serving the town centre.
The 17:45 journey from Haddington will operate 5 minutes later.
Service 123
Revised timetable.
Following community feedback, an additional small loop morning journey will operate, providing a bus from Gifford arriving in Haddington at 07:06 Monday to Saturday.
The 17:00 big loop journey from Haddington will operate 5 minutes later.
