Service change from Monday 15 MarchAdditional journeys to provide extra capacity for essential journeys

In anticipation of an expected increase in customers from Monday 15 March with the return of primary pupils and partial return of secondary pupils to schools across Edinburgh and the Lothians, a number of additional journeys will be added to the Lothian network.

Extra journeys will be added to weekday mornings and afternoons (during school term only) on certain services to provide additional capacity for those making essential journeys. The Service 45 will also return on school days between Heriot-Watt University and Lauriston Place via Currie, Colinton and Bruntsfield (with two morning journeys and two afternoon journeys). An additional morning and afternoon journey will operate on the Service 42 between Leith and Holy Rood High School only.

On the East Coast Buses network, school services 125 126 127 will operate to bring students to North Berwick High School, as per this timetable.

Details of these new journeys can be found below (times will be added to the timetable section of the website later this week). You can plan your journey through the dedicated journey planner or through the app which offers journey planning tools and real-time service updates, all integrated with Google Maps.

If you need further assistance with journey planning, please contact us by phoning our bus information line on 0131 555 6363, or contact us on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.

Recommended steps for safe travel

We want to make sure that children and young people travelling to school can be confident they’re keeping themselves and others safe. With that in mind, here is a reminder of our recommended steps for safe travel. Please ensure this is followed at all times when making essential journeys with us.

  • Wash your hands or use sanitiser before boarding the bus.
  • Wear a face covering for the duration of your journey (covering your nose and mouth) unless you are exempt.
  • Allow any customers to leave the bus first before boarding one at a time, giving space to other customers at all times.
  • If you don’t have a Junior or Student Ridacard, consider paying by contactless if you can (read more on this below) or by using Child CitySingles (you can purchase these through our e-shop.
  • As tempting as it may be to sit with friends, please limit your contact with others and sit apart where possible.
  • Leave windows open to let fresh air circulate throughout the vehicle.
  • When leaving the bus, please use hand sanitiser or wash your hands thoroughly when you arrive at school or home.
  • Our drivers are happy to help – please follow any instructions from them and don’t forget to let them know if you have any concerns.

Contactless available for child tickets

Contactless is now available for child tickets! Even if your child doesn’t have their own contactless bank card or device, there are a number of prepaid contactless cards which children and young people can use to pay for travel, such as The Rooster Card (other products are also available). Please note that capping is not available for child travel at this time.

When your child boards they just need to:

  • Ask the driver for a child ticket and state they wish to pay by contactless.
  • Wait for the driver to instruct them to tap their card/device.
  • If successful, a paper child ticket will be printed.
