Electric Buses & Developing Technologies

Over the course of the last decade, Lothian has removed around 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from our carbon footprint through our fleet replacement strategies.

Electric Buses

We were awarded £1,700,000 by Scottish Power Energy Network’s ‘Green Economy Fund’ which was used to introduce four Alexander Dennis E400 City Electric Double Decker vehicles into service in June 2021. The design incorporates SPEN’s branding, along with all required Lothian signage, and is apparent to our customers that they are a new, environmentally friendly addition to our fleet. Charging points have been installed within our Central depot.

The introduction of Edinburgh’s first fully electric double decker buses is enabling us to continue on this journey, further reducing our impact on the environment.

Developing technologies

The nature of sustainable technology is such that it is constantly evolving and adapting. Lothian is committed to learning about emerging technologies and is in frequent dialogue with partners and industry experts to investigate new and innovative ways to provide a sustainably-responsible, environmentally-conscious service for residents and visitors alike.

We frequently trial vehicles from manufacturers on our network for periods, to enable our Engineering and Driver Teams to appraise their performance, durability, maintenance requirements and drivability.

Lothian will continue to monitor the latest technologies and developments. Watch this space!
