Service change from Sunday 28 MayRevision to the network for improved reliability and connectivity

A number of changes to the Lothian network will be introduced to improve reliability and connectivity across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Taking effect from 28 May 2023, new or altered services will be introduced to improve reliability and connectivity, replacing existing services on some parts of the network. With the imminent arrival of the Trams to Newhaven, our teams have been working hard to ensure our bus network will continue to meet the needs of customers.

Included in this review are some key changes, detailed below.

Service 1
Increased to every 15 minutes Monday to Friday daytime.

Muirhouse, Pilton, Goldenacre, Inverleith – more buses with Services 8 and 9 providing a combined 10-minute frequency Monday – Saturday daytime, and 15-minute frequency Sunday daytime.

Service 31
Increased to every 20 minutes Sunday daytime, providing direct links from Polton Mill to Edinburgh.

Service 43
More buses at peak times Monday to Friday.

Service X7
More buses at peak times Monday to Friday with the frequency doubled to every 30-minutes on Sunday.

New Service 9 will replace the section of Service 41 between the city centre and King’s Buildings

Altered Service 22 will replace the section of Service 47/47B between the city centre and Granton Harbour.

Service 41 withdrawn (see new Service 9 and altered Service 47/47B).

New Service 46 will replace the sections of Service 30 between Musselburgh and Stoneybank, and Service 49 between Royal Infirmary, Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg and Rosewell.

Altered Service 47/47B will replace the section of Service 41 between the city centre and cammo.

Altered Service 48 will replace the section of Service 30 between Musselburgh and Stoneybank.

Service 49 revised route Fort Kinnaird to Royal Infirmary (for Rosewell see new Service 46).

Service 1
Revised timetable. The Monday-Friday daytime frequency will be increased to every 15 minutes to provide more capacity and support growth.

Service 2
Revised route. Buses will now terminate at Hermiston Gait. Due to a significant increase in running times to provide a reliable service, the section between Gyle Centre and Hermiston Gait will no longer be served. Customers wishing to travel to Edinburgh Park and Gyle Centre can transfer to Edinburgh Trams or Service 36 at Hermiston Gait or Services 12, 21 and 22 at Broomhouse roundabout.

Service 3
Revised timetable.

Service 4
Revised route and timetable. Service 4 will be extended from The Jewel (Milton Link) to Queen Margaret University via the A1. Buses will no longer serve ASDA car park. Bingham Roundabout will no longer be served by Service 4 with buses operating direct between Duddingston Row and Bingham Avenue.

Service 8

Service 9
New service introduced operating between Muirhouse and King’s Buildings. From Muirhouse, Service 9 will follow Service 8 to Surgeons’ Hall. From Surgeons’ Hall it will operate via Nicholson Square and Causewayside to King’s Buildings following the current Service 41 route.

This will provide more capacity on the busy north side of Service 8 and create direct links between student accommodation in Broughton and the University and enhanced links to the revitalised east end of the city centre.

Services 8 and 9 will each operate every 20 minutes on Monday-Friday and Saturday, providing a combined 10-minute service between Muirhouse and Surgeons’ Hall. On Sundays, Service 9 will operate every 30 minutes.

Service 10
Revised route and timetable. From North Junction Street, Service 10 will continue along Ocean Drive and terminate at Ocean Terminal. Western Harbour will instead be served by Service 11.

Service 11
Revised route and timetable. From Lindsay Road, Service 11 will operate via Sandpiper Road, Newhaven Place and terminate at Western Harbour.

Service 12
Revised route and timetable. In the South Gyle area, Service 12 will operate via South Gyle Crescent instead of South Gyle Broadway (which will instead be served by Service 22). Late evening journeys will terminate at Broomhall.

Service 19
Revised route and timetable. Service 19 will be extended from King’s Road to Eastfield. This will provide more buses between Portobello and the city centre and provide a new direct connection between Portobello and the Western General.

Service 21
Revised timetable. On Monday-Friday and Saturday minor timetable changes will be introduced to help with reliability. On Sunday, the daytime frequency will be reduced to every 30 minutes with buses no longer serving the Gyle Centre with all journeys operating between Clovenstone and the Royal Infirmary.

Service 22
Revised route and timetable. Service 22 will be extended from the West End to Granton Harbour. From Lothian Road, it will operate via Queensferry Street and will follow the current Service 47 route to Granton Harbour via Western General at Crewe Road South, Crewe Toll and Waterfront Avenue, creating new links from the west to the north of the city.

Princes Street and Waterloo Place will no longer be served by this service. 

In the South Gyle area, Service 22 will operate via South Gyle Broadway instead of South Gyle Crescent (which will instead be served by Service 12).

Revised timetable. The Monday-Friday daytime frequency is reduced to every 12 minutes. Some extra peak time journeys will be withdrawn for the summer and reintroduced when the universities return in September.

Revised timetable on all days to improve reliability. The Sunday daytime frequency will be increased to every 20 minutes with buses serving both Hopefield and Polton Mill in Midlothian.

Service 41
Service 41 will cease to operate and will be replaced by revisions to other services. Between Cammo, Cramond, Blackhall, Craigleith and the West End, Service 41 will be replaced by revised services 47/47B (see details below). Services 47/47B will provide more capacity along Queensferry Road during the morning peak than the current Service 41, and retain links to the West End and to the University of Edinburgh Central area.

Between King’s Buildings, Blackford, Marchmont and the Old Town, Service 41 will be replaced by new Service 9 (see details above).

Service 45
Revised route and timetable. Service 45 will operate between Heriot-Watt University and King’s Road (terminating at Marine roundabout). Some morning and afternoon peak time journeys will continue to service Portobello and Eastfield. The section between Eastfield and Queen Margaret University will no longer be served.

Customers travelling between Leopold Place, London Road and Queen Margaret University will be accommodated by revised Service 4 offering more frequent buses, a weekend service and quicker journey times. Customers from the Portobello area can now use Services 21 or 49 to connect to Service 4 at Duddingston Park South.

In Portobello, Service 19 will be extended from King’s Road to Eastfield to enhance service levels in this area and support growth.

Service 46
New service introduced operating between Musselburgh and Rosewell via Stoneybank, Fort Kinnaird, Royal Infirmary, Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg.

Between Musselburgh and Fort Kinnaird, it will follow the current route of Service 30* and then continue along Niddrie Mains Road, Greendykes Road to the Royal Infirmary. From there it will follow the route of current Service 49 to Rosewell.

*Service 46 will not call at QMU campus, but will stop just outside on Whitehill Farm Road.

Service 46 will operate every 30 minutes on Monday-Friday and Saturday. Coordinated with a revised service 48, there will be a bus every 15 minutes between Musselburgh and the Royal Infirmary. On Sunday, service 46 will operate every 60 minutes between Royal Infirmary and Rosewell. On late evenings, it will operate hourly but only between Rosewell and Dalkeith Centre where a connection with Service 48 coming from Fort Kinnaird will be offered at Buccleuch Street.

There will be a morning school bus from Rosewell to Bonnyrigg and an afternoon school bus from Bonnyrigg to Rosewell to assist with capacity at Lasswade High School.

Services 47/47B
Revised route and timetable. Services 47/47B will operate between Cammo and Penicuik Ladywood.

From Cammo, buses will operate as per current Service 41 route via Cramond, Davidson Mains, Blackhall and Craigleith to the west end of Princes Street and continue to Penicuik Ladywood as per current route via Lothian Road, Bristo Square, Newington, Cameron Toll, Kaimes and Straiton. Easter Bush will continue to be served at peak hours by Service 47B.

Granton Harbour, Crewe Toll and the Western General will no longer be served by Services 47/47B, this section will be replaced by revised Service 22 (morning and afternoon peak times retain these links on Service X37). Penicuik and Liberton retain direct connections to the Western General on Services 37 and X37.

Service 48
Revised route and timetable. Service 48 will be extended from Fort Kinnaird to Musselburgh Grammar School via Newcraighall and Stoneybank following the route of Service 46 described above. Coordinated with revised Service 46, there will be a bus every 15 minutes between Musselburgh and the Royal Infirmary on weekdays and Saturdays.

Service 48 will not call at QMU campus but stop just outside on Whitehill Farm Road.

Service 49
Revised route, buses will operate between Fort Kinnaird and the Royal Infirmary only. The section between Rosewell and Royal Infirmary will be replaced by new Service 46 following the same route between Rosewell, Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith and the Royal Infirmary.

Service X5
Revised timetable. On Monday-Friday the second journey from North Berwick will depart earlier to arrive in the City Centre for 08:30.

Service X6
Revised timetable on Monday-Friday and Saturday. To improve timetable reliability, the poorly used journeys at Amisfield Park will no longer be provided at peak times. On Sunday the daytime frequency will be reduced to hourly, however Service X7 will increase from hourly to every 30 minutes, resulting in more ‘fast’ buses for Haddington.

Service X7
Revised timetable on all days to improve reliability. On Monday to Friday there will be an additional journey introduced in the morning peak from Dunbar to Haddington, and an extra return journey to Dunbar in the afternoon peak. On Sunday the daytime frequency will be increased from hourly to every 30 minutes.

Service 106
Revised route and timetable. Service 106 will no longer terminate at Fort Kinnaird and will terminate at Queen Margaret University instead operating from Newhailes Road via Clayknowes Road, providing a direct link from East Lothian towns to Queen Margaret University.

Revised Lothian Buses’ Services 46 and 48 will provide direct links between Fort Kinnaird and Musselburgh. Prentice of Haddington continue to provide direct links with Service 108 between Fort Kinnaird, Tranent and Haddington.

Minor timetable changes. The last journey from Penicuik at 00:12 is withdrawn due to low passenger numbers.

Service 43
Revised timetable. On Monday to Friday there will be an additional journey introduced in the morning peak from Queensferry to the City Centre, and an extra return journey to Queensferry will be introduced on the afternoon peak to support growth on this corridor.

Service X18
Revised timetable will be introduced on all days to improve the reliability of the service. A new night service is introduced on this corridor (see Night Bus information for details).

Service X27
Minor timetable changes. A later journey from Edinburgh to Deans will be introduced at 23:48.

Service X28
Minor timetable changes.

Service 100
Revised timetable. The frequency at night between 0100hrs and 0400hrs will be increased to every 20 minutes. On the early morning between 0400hrs and 0500hrs there will be departures every 8 minutes (instead of every 10 minutes) providing more capacity towards Edinburgh Airport.

Service 200
Revised timetable.

Service 400
Minor timetable changes on Monday-Friday and Saturday to improve reliability. On Sunday the daytime frequency will be reduced to every 40 minutes to improve reliability.

NightBus N3
Revised timetable. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the frequency will be increased to every 30 minutes.

NightBus N11
Revised route and timetable. N11 will terminate at Hyvots Bank, the section between Hyvots Bank and the Royal Infirmary will no longer be served due to extremely low customer demand. In the City Centre, buses will continue as N16 to Silverknowes via Leith – through journeys available.

NightBus N14
Revised route and timetable. N14 will only operate between Muirhouse (Waterfront Gait) and Surgeons’ Hall. The section between Surgeons’ Hall and the Royal Infirmary will no longer be served, however the N30 frequency will be increased (see below) to partly replace N14 for customers travelling between the city centre and Craigmillar/Niddrie areas. Due to extremely low customer demand, the section between Craigmillar and the Royal Infirmary will not be replaced.

The Muirhouse terminus will be moved to Waterfront Gait and N14 will no longer operate the loop via Muirhouse Parkway, Pennywell Gardens and Pennywell Road. The service will continue to operate every 60 minutes, a revised timetable being introduced to coordinate with N16 on Leith Street and Leith Walk.

NightBus N16
Revised timetable. The frequency between Silverknowes and city centre will be increased to every 30 minutes. Between the city centre and Torphin, buses will continue to operate every hour. Part Route buses will operate between Silverknowes and city centre and will continue as N11 to Hyvots Bank via Tollcross and Morningside – through journeys available.

NightBus N22
Revised route and timetable. N22 will no longer operate to Leith and Western Harbour, buses will instead terminate at Princes Street. There will be changes to the west side of the route with buses no longer terminating at Edinburgh Park Station. From South Gyle Access, westbound journeys will continue to operate along South Gyle Broadway and will terminate at Gyle Roundabout.

Journeys towards the city centre will operate via Lochside Crescent, Redheughs Avenue and South Gyle Access.
In the city centre, N22 journeys will continue as N30 to Musselburgh via Niddrie and Queen Margaret University – through journeys available.

NightBus N26
Minor timetable changes.

NightBus N30
Revised timetable. The frequency on the east side of the route (between the city centre and Musselburgh) will be increased to every 30 minutes on all nights. Heading west, some journeys now continue as N22 to South Gyle – through journeys available.

Lothiancountry NightBus N18
New night service introduced between Edinburgh city centre and Whitburn operating via Broxburn, Uphall, Bathgate and Armadale following the daytime X18 route. One journey will depart from Edinburgh (Leith Street) at 00:50 seven nights a week. Additional journeys will operate on weekends only: 01:10 from Bathgate (George Place, outside DreadnoughtRock nightclub) to Whitburn and 03:15 from Edinburgh to Bathgate.

Lothiancountry NightBus N28
Revised timetable. The 00:25 journey from Edinburgh will start five minutes later, and the weekend 03:30 journey from Edinburgh will start ten minutes later at 03:40. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, a new journey will be introduced from Bathgate at 01:02 to Livingston Centre operating as per the daytime X28 route via Deans, Knightsridge, Ladywell and Craigshill.

EastCoastbuses NightHawk N106
Service withdrawn, replaced by N107.

EastCoastbuses NightHawk N107
New service replacing N106. The route will be revised to operate via Brunstane with Fort Kinnaird no longer served due to low customer numbers (see NightBus N30 for journeys to Fort Kinnaird). The 00:21 journey from Edinburgh (Haymarket) to Haddington will operate seven nights a week. On weekends, this journey will continue to Dunbar and the 03:11 journey from Edinburgh will operate to Haddington.

EastCoastbuses NightHawk N113
Revised route and timetable. This service will only operate on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Monday to Friday service will be partly replaced by N107. A revised route will be implemented in Musselburgh with buses operating via Linkfield Road and Haddington Road instead of Pinkie Road and MacBeth Moir Road (see NightBus N26 for journeys to Pinkie Road).
