Central depot is celebrating a big birthday90 years of homing buses

Central Depot

Our Annandale Street depot turns 90 this month.

The building which originally opened in 1922 as a 90,000ft industrial exhibition centre costing £40,000 was built in just 4 months.

It was designed to be off the road to allow space for the expected crowds. Many events were held over the following four years including boxing matches, motor shows, Christmas fairs and home shows which saw crowds of up to 20,000 people.

In 1926, the building was sold to Edinburgh Corporation Transport for £30,000 to cope with an ever expanding fleet. Changing our name to Lothian Regional Transport in 1975 and Lothian Buses in 1999, we extended the building twice, once in 1933 and again in 1963.

We extended our operations and opened Longstone depot in 1955 with Marine depot following in 1962.

Today our Central depot houses over 200 buses and is operational 24 hours a day 365 days a year. There is rarely a time when all our buses are in the depot.

Happy Birthday Central Depot!
